Ways of Seeing Ways of Seeing:
A formal analysis of a book
Ways of Seeing Ways of Seeing is an open-ended formal analysis of a book, Ways of Seeing by John Berger (designed by Richard Hollis). It aims to help redefine the book by emphasising its inherent qualities as an object over its function as a means of transmitting information. Ways of Seeing Ways of Seeing reuses the visual language of the book to generate a series of 60X40in posters. The exercise encourages a reassessment of the book as an object of beauty in its own right by deconstructing, reformatting and/or reconstituting specifically identified aspects. Aspects of the book explored to date can be viewed below. In addition, a contextual analysis will be carried out; it will start with the ideas behind the book. It will trace the evolution of these ideas from screen to printed form and finally it will include the design solution that facilitated this transformation. Every book has a story.
